BUIES CREEK – The Fighting Camels opened the 2022-23 season with a 155-102 home win over UNC Pembroke Saturday morning. It's the first season-opening win for the Camels since 2019.
The Camels posted the fastest times in 10 of the 14 events on the day, and had two of the top three finishers in 12 of the 14 events.
The Camels got off to a fast start winning the 200 medley relay with the A team posting a time of 1:47.21. Entering as exhibition to wrap up the match, the A team posted the fastest time in the 200 free relay, the only other relay of the day, with 1:37.86.
Meredith Ashburn had a solid day for the Camels, taking the top spot in both the 100 and 200 free with times of 53.46, 1:57.83, respectively. The senior also won the 100 fly with a time of 59.05
Fifteen newcomers got their first chance to swim at the collegiate level Saturday, and two of them were backstroke event winners.
Angelica Ragazzoni won the 100 back posting a 57.45, and
Laura Lopez took the 200 back 2:04.40.
